How To Install Skylight Blinds?
There are a whole host of benefits that come with choosing the right skylight blinds for your home. They allow you to manage light, reduce fading on soft furnishings and best manage glare for your evening entertainment. However, as a task few of us take on regularly, installing slanted window blinds can be a bit of a grey area. We get a lot of customers asking how to install skylight blinds and, because the process is so easy, we thought it best to pull the answers together into an informative blog post.
Skylight blind installation explained
Before we go through the simple steps to installing your own skylight blind, it’s important to understand how to order one. Our range of roof blinds come in a wide variety of colours, fabrics and sizes. We have a complete guide on the different types of blinds for skylights on our blog here where you can start to decipher which is the right option for you. All of the skylight blinds that we manufactured are crafted for individual roof window brands. On our website, you will see that it’s easy to filter through our entire range to find those specifically made for your window brand. You must have this information to hand when placing your order. Skylight blinds are manufactured to sit within the window recess. They install flush against all four edges, using channels to pull the fabric tense and achieve a smooth, professional and neat look. Having the wrong sized roof window blind will put a halt to your installation plans straight away. You won’t be able to line up the channels or screw in the top cassette if your blind is too big or too small. So, the first step towards installing your own skylight blind is to identify your roof window.
How to identify your roof window?
It’s not uncommon for homeowners to have very little idea what brand their roof windows are until they come to purchase blinds. After all, unless you were heavily involved in the design and construction of your new roof extension or back extension, people commonly choose the most practical or cheapest windows to fit their needs. If you do know the brand of your roof window - great! It will make the process of ordering your skylight blind considerably easier. However, don’t worry if you don’t have this information to hand. Thankfully, roof window manufacturers understand that this is a common snippet of information that many homeowners need. And, in general, the information will be printed on your window frame itself. You need to identify the skylight window code. Most brands use codes to help easily differentiate between their windows. For example, all VELUX® roof windows manufactured after 1968 will have what’s known as a ‘data plate’ or ‘type sign’ fitted to them. This provides the owner with the specific information about this window model. You will also find this information on other popular brands, including Keylite®, Fakro® and Dakea®. The exact location of this information varies which is why we’ve pulled together a selection of guides to help you identify yours.

Older roof window blinds occasionally don’t fall under any of the brands we’ve mentioned above. In this instance, you have two options - contact a member of the Skylight Blinds Direct team on sales@skylight-blinds-direct.co.uk or opt for bespoke skylight blinds.
